Welcome to the land of Warren Buffett, Creighton basketball, and red meat. A city so good, Peyton couldn't stop yelling it. I spent a lot of time here and can confidently say this: Not only does Omaha punch above its weight, but this trip has some teeth for the right crowd. It's also going to be one of the most modestly priced options out of any region.
The Location: Omaha is a very spread out city, and while i'm going to recommend some homebases, picking the wrong one (or somewhere else) wont make or break your trip.
If you're looking to stay in a hotel, The Capitol District will make sense if you like rowdy, club-y spots that will be bussin’ every weekend. They can get a little ratchet, but always they have some live music options and good stops during the CWS, especially to meet other out of towners.
The Old Market is Omaha’s tourist hub. You'll find hotels and rentals here for a good price, and a mix of great bars like Billy Frogs, Laka Lono, and The Dub Downstairs. Havana Garage is a cigar bar that lets you smoke cigs inside, and Brickway Distillery will have the environment to match your trip - perfect for a bachelor party. Jams is a solid crowd-pleaser for brunch.
Blackstone is Omaha’s trendy 20-something hotspot and the birthplace of the Reuben sandwich. AriBnB or VRBO will be the move here and you'll only have a short stumble home from some of the busiest and best bars in the city. Grab a boot and the OG Reuben at Crescent Moon, Pizza at Nolis, and visit the Lil Rickys rooftop. Nite Owl is my favorite spot in the city and the goat for late-night burgers and drink specials.
The Hook: Omaha is already a great college sports town, but it becomes important in the summer: welcome to the Greatest Show on Dirt. The Men’s College World Series takes over Omaha, turning the city into the epicenter of college athletics for two weeks. The city throws an entire state fair for college baseball. Tickets start at about $40 per game, and there’s multiple games each day, encouraged tailgating, and swaths of summer vibes.
If you’re planning a trip, arrive in the morning to catch more games and soak in the full weekend vibe. College baseball has its powerhouses, and odds are your team will be in the mix if you support: Florida, Texas, Virginia, TCU, Arkansas, Vanderbilt, Louisville, North Carolina, Stanford, Mississippi State, LSU, or Ole Miss #SEC.
The Time Wasters: If you're entire trip is centered on the CWS, then I'd suggest The Blatt, TSR, The Old Mattress Factory, or Rocco’s—where they sell thousands of infamous jello shots every year. They cost $5 a pop but they also turn it into a competition where schools compete to drink the most and support charity. After the games, the area near the field turns into a festival of live music and massive beer gardens, with a $15 cover and tallboys for $8.
Home of the famous Black Angus beef, Omaha’s steakhouses don’t just hold their own—they often beat the heavyweights in New York, Vegas, and Chicago. Committee Chophouse is the new kid on the block in Blackstone. Reservations are required, so book early. Omaha Prime and 801 are downtown’s steak spots in the Old Market that'll meet all upscale expectations. Out west, you have The Drover, the local’s crown jewel, and Mahogany with the best sides. Last, Warren Buffet swears by a 20 oz T-Bone with a double-order of hashbrowns from Gorat’s. People pay millions to eat there for Berkshire’s annual charity lunch... they also have a legendary reuben that squares up with The Moon and Committee.
Feeling lucky? Just across the river in Council Bluffs, you’ll find a trio of innocent-looking casinos, ready for a group of confident bachelors. The Horseshoe is my favorite because I like table games. I also think its the cleanest. Ameristar stands out because of their sportsbook. Last, Harrah’s is the closest, but it's also cursed – I’ve only ever lost money there.
If you’re more into beer than booze, Sign up for the Omaha Penny Pack. Long story short, It’s a free program where your second beer at any of the 13 participating breweries costs one penny.
